Healthy snacks to pack while you travel

There’s something about cruising at 35,000 feet in the air that gives you cravings for snacks. Sadly, staring at the sugary, not-so-healthy choices in the airport gift shop doesn’t get you too excited. Let us also add that bringing aboard a pungent, hot lunch is not a good way to make friends with the traveler sitting next to you in 22C.

Instead of opting for the high-sugar, high calorie snacks and foods that can leave you dehydrated, tired, stinky, and even a tad grumpy, grab a few healthy options before leaving home. You will certainly feel much better when you land in your vacation destination!

Here is our list of healthy travel snacks you shouldn’t board your flight without.

Almond Butter + Apple

Bring yourself back to your childhood with this after-school snack favorite. There are so many ‘butters’ out there besides peanut butter and sunbutter. If you haven’t tried almond butter yet, you are missing out!

Freeze Dried Fruit

If you want to travel light, pack a variety of freeze dried-fruit to snack on. Mangoes, bananas, strawberries, and peaches. Yum!

Jerky

This road trip favorite is also a perfect, protein-packed snack for the skies. Choices range from traditional beef jerky, to teriyaki, to grass-fed bison, and more!

Ancient Grain Granola

Purely Elizabeth might be our new favorite granola. Made with organic quinoa (excellent protein!), millet, and chia, this salty-sweet, crunchy granola is a natural hit.

Kale Chips

Yes, we know that Cheetos, Doritos, Fritos, well, all the crunchy ‘tos’ chips are delicious, but we all know they aren’t winning any awards for nutrition. If you need something salty and crunchy, kale chips are a winner!

Pita Chips + Hummus

Most grocery stores sell this snack already in a combination pack. Otherwise, pack a small tub of hummus and a bag of pita chips. Enjoy!

Fig Crackers + Manchego Cheese

Why not pretend you are enjoying local cheese and wine in the vineyards of Rioja, Spain? This combination of fig crackers and sheep’s milk cheese is so delectable. You will probably order a glass of wine to go with it!

Dark Chocolate Protein Powder + Water

Bring a scoop of your favorite protein powder and an empty reusable water bottle. You can fill it with water and shake it up for a refreshing protein treat.

Ginger Gummies

If you have a nervous stomach when flying, ginger is such a helpful and natural remedy. Pack a bag of ginger gummies to keep you busy chewing, and calm your butterfly tummy.

No-Bake Energy Bites with Ginger and Tumeric

Have you tried turmeric? This superfood in the ginger family is an anti-inflammatory and a strong antioxidant. If you have time to prepare a snack ahead of time, these protein-packed energy bites might be the perfect up-in-the-air snack. Yes, they are even covered in chocolate! Don’t be that desperate traveler staring at the mediocre snacks in the airport gift shop. Candy, gummy bears, and bags of chips stare back at you, trying to lure you in. JUST DON’T. Avoid this situation, and come prepared with your own healthy travel snacks instead. Your stomach will thank you!
